What we do

SAIF's claims division has a variety of roles. Read on to get an idea of the different types of work we do.

Claims adjuster

As a claims adjuster, you play a vital role in the workers’ compensation process. You are responsible for collecting and analyzing work injury information to make informed and impartial decisions about one of the most important aspects of this job: administering benefits. You will manage claims throughout the entire process until resolution while providing support and guidance to our customers along the way. Here at SAIF, you will work with several internal business partners, including nurse consultants, investigators, return-to-work consultants, in-house attorneys, vocational consultants, and more. In addition, you will collaborate with medical providers throughout the state. Claims adjudication is governed by Oregon administrative rules and statutes. Claims assistant

As a claims assistant, your main responsibility will be to support a team of adjusters during the claims process. You will be the primary point of contact for injured workers, policyholders, and other customers, and answering phones will be your top priority. Apart from this, you will also be responsible for various activities, including document review and mailing, appointment scheduling, requesting medical records, legal correspondence, and following up to ensure that our workers receive the appropriate benefits. You will thrive as a claims assistant if you enjoy working in a fast-paced, customer-oriented, and team-focused environment. 

Return-to-work consultant

As a return-to-work (RTW) consultant, your main responsibilities are to get injured workers back to work as quickly as medically appropriate. Our consultants work directly with policyholders and medical providers to identify potential light duty work and determine if any modifications are needed. You will create job descriptions and help policyholders ensure they have a return-to-work plan in place. Youll work closely with state incentive programs, adjusters, policyholders, providers, and workers. If you are a collaborative problem solver with strong communication skills who enjoys actively helping policyholders get their workers back to work, you will thrive as a RTW consultant.

Claims specialist for audit

As a claims specialist on the audit team, you are an important business partner for the claims division as it relates to time-loss rates and authorizationsTo accurately pay time-loss benefits to injured workers, you will set the claim’s average weekly wage. With a keen eye for detail, you will review payroll from various policyholders across the state. You will also review claims at closure to ensure time-loss benefits were paid accurately and in a timely mannerStrong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills, and the capacity to process repetitive tasks are needed to succeed in this role.

Nurse consultant

Our nurse Consultants are an essential resource in the claims division. Their expertise is used to review medical history, treatment plans, and procedures throughout the life of a claim. Using evidence-based resources and objective data, nurse consultants work closely with internal and external business partners, such as Managed Care Organizations, to identify potential barriers and propose strategies that assist with recovery, decision making, and positive outcomes in claims.

Field investigator

As a field investigator, you’ll specialize in compensability investigations, surveillance, or a combination of both. Questions of compensability, conflicting information in reports, medical questions, and third-party potential may alert our claims adjusters to the need to investigate. As a SAIF investigator, you’ll establish the facts of a claim or help determine when a worker is ready to return to work through information gathering, field investigations, activity checks, surveillance, and third-party investigations. If you are inquisitive and have a high attention to detail, working as a field investigator may be a perfect fit for you.
