How to operate a forklift safely: Safety procedures and principles
This video covers how to safely operate a forklift (or powered industrial truck) and discusses important procedures and principles to use before, during, and after getting into the driver's seat. Whether you're an experienced forklift operator or looking to get forklift certified for the first time, these practices will help you and those around you go home safely.
Forklifts, or powered industrial trucks, are used in a wide variety of Oregon industries and are the cause of a significant number of injuries every year. On average, SAIF has received more than 200 claims from forklift injuries every year for the past 10 years.
SAIF has created a video that teaches how to safely operate a forklift and discusses important procedures and principles to use before, during, and after getting into the driver's seat. The lessons illustrated in the video are important for both experienced forklift operators and those looking to get forklift-certified for the first time.
The full video can be found on YouTube in both English and Spanish, and fulfills a portion of the forklift training required by Oregon OSHA.
Operators must be at least 18 years old and, as per Oregon OSHA, receive classroom training, hands-on training, and take an evaluation.
