SAIF board appoints new chair, welcomes new member

Board welcomes John Mohlis and elects Jeff Stone as new board chair

On June 6, the SAIF board of directors voted to elect Jeff Stone board chair and Krishna Balasubramani vice chair. Board member Jenny Ulum has served as board chair since 2014 and will remain on the board; Stone was elected vice chair in 2017.

In addition, the board welcomed John Mohlis. Mohlis's appointment to the board was approved by the Oregon State Senate in May, as part of a vote on a number of governor appointments.

Stone is executive director and CEO of the Oregon Association of Nurseries (OAN), based in Wilsonville. Prior to joining OAN, Stone worked as chief of staff to the Metro Council and as an advisor to U.S. Senator Bob Packwood.

Balasubramani is a partner in the firm Sather, Byerly and Holloway, LLP, in Portland. Prior to joining Sather, Byerly and Holloway in 1996, he was a pro tem administrative law judge for the Workers' Compensation Board.

Mohlis served as the executive secretary of the Oregon State Building and Construction Trades Council. He also served for five years on the workers' compensation Management-Labor Advisory Committee (MLAC), three terms as a commissioner on the Portland Development Commission, and two terms on the Oregon State Apprenticeship Council.

Mohlis' appointment comes after the retirement of Kevin Jensen, former business manager for Ironworkers Local 29 in Portland, who served on the board since 2014.

SAIF's board represents a cross-section of the workers' comp system, appointed by the governor to four-year terms. They represent organized labor, policyholders, the legal profession, and associations. The other board members are Ulum, a public relations executive in Eugene, and Maurice Rahming, president of O'Neill Electric in Portland.
