Cardboard, knives, masking tape, glue. Not exactly the tools to build a civilization. But maybe a good place to start.
At Portland State University, where more than 300 students are pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in architecture, first-term students in the three-year master’s program practice turning their ideas into dozens of rough 3D models. The students come from a wide variety of disciplines and work experiences—from fine arts to psychology. For many it’s their first exposure to the field of design.
Today, their tools are paper and utility knives. But someday, their ideas may become real places to live, work, and play—places that make a positive difference in all our lives.
